The History of CBD in the UK

on

Humans and cannabis go way backlike, since the Ice AgeFor thousands of years, it’s been used for fibre, food, medicine, and even religious and recreational purposes. But guess what? The stigma around it is kinda new. From the Bronze Age to Queen Victoria’s era, cannabis had a major role. It wasn’t always the ‘bad guy.’ In fact, it was cultivated for ropes, sails, and more during the Roman and Anglo-Saxon times. Plus, it had a legit spot in medieval medicine – treating everything from gout to birthing issues!

History of Cannabis Use

Fast forward to the Elizabethan Era – Queen Elizabeth I was all about that hemp life! King Henry VIII even made farmers grow hemp or face fines. But, things got smelly, and farmers got tired, so the hemp hype declined. Queen Victoria herself used cannabis for menstrual cramps! And her physician, Sir Russell Reynolds, was all in for cannabis medicine. It was a staple in the Victorian medicine cabinet, available in tinctures, pills, and extracts.

Cannabis gained new attention in the English-speaking Western medical world at the introduction of Irish physician William Brooke O’Shaughnessy, who had studied the drug while working as a medical officer in Bengal with the East India Company, and brought a quantity of cannabis with him on his return to Britain in 1842. Use of psychoactive cannabis was already prevalent in some of the new territories that Britain added to its empire, including South Asia and Southern Africa.

History of Cannabis Laws in the UK

While a question of if the UK is to legalise cannabis remains, at one point it actually was. But wait, here comes the drama! In the 1920s, recreational cannabis got the boot with the Dangerous Drugs Act. Doctors lost interest, and by the '60s, we had our first ‘cannabis bust’ in Soho. The '70s brought Bob Marley vibes, and the '80s saw a spike in convictions. Fast forward to 2018 – medical cannabis got the green light!

The change in the law in 2018 allowed doctors on the General Medical Council’s specialist register to prescribe cannabis-based products for medicinal use, where clinically appropriate and in the best interests of patients. However, access to medical cannabis remains limited and regulated, as only products that meet a certain quality standard and have a licence from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency can be prescribed.

In contrast to cannabis, CBD does not induce a euphoric or psychoactive experience. CBD offers numerous potential health advantages, including pain relief, anxiety reduction, and enhancement of sleep quality, and it is legally permissible for consumption.
